How to trap those Pesky Fruit Flies!

I hate flies! I feel like the have invaded my house and they are not welcomed. I understand that they might feel like they are welcomed since my children keep leaving the door open for them, but I assure you they are not!

I like to keep fresh fruit at hand, but I hate that fruit flies also like my fruit. So I’ve been looking for ways to capture and kill fruit flies…because swatting them with a fly swatter just makes you look like a crazy person swatting at the air! Here’s what I tested and I’m happy to say it works!

I put a 50/50 mixture of water and apple cider vinegar in a jar. Then I covered in with plastic wrap and poked small holes in it ( I used a tooth pick). The fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar and once they get in, they can’t get out!  (Insert menacing laugh here!) It’s that easy. I did this in the morning and by the afternoon I already had a dozen of those pesky flies floating in the vinegar mixture!

I also add a few drops of liquid soap

I use straight apple cider vinegar with a few drops of liquid dish soap. The liquid dish soap stops the pests from taking off again after they land on the apple cider vinegar. We are plagued every year by fruit flies because of the grocery stores here. This also works for larger house flies which we get more than our share of due to cows being in close proximity. You do not need any plastic wrap. I use this all the time. It works! Works really well! For extra bad years I also hang fly strips over or very close to the apple cider vinegar.
