New Problem With Target Registers & Gift Card Deals!

A HUGE thanks to Totally Target for the heads up on this!

Target’s new register system is becoming frustrating as of late!!  Now it prevents the use of manufacturers coupons with gift card deals if your total falls below zero after their new “fake” $10.00 discount that’s being applied to all gift card transactions.  Does NOT affect the use of Target store coupons.

For every $5 Gift Card deal the Target register automatically applies a “pretend” $10 manufacturer discount. This glitch is not a good thing!

You aren’t getting a $10.00 discount on anything. When you buy gift card items the register doesn’t give you a discount it just takes $10.00 away from your useable coupon total. For example, on the Schick deal you buy 2 razors at $14.98.  You still get charged $14.98 but the register for some reason thinks you are paying only $4.98 so it won’t let you use more than $4.98 in coupons.  Even though your order rings up $14.98 and that’s what you and the cashier see- internally the register is subtracting $10.00 so when you try to use (2) $4.00 coupons it will only scan the first one at $4.00. The second one scans at $.98 because the register thinks you’ve only spent $4.98 when you’ve actually spent $14.98.

I’ll use this weeks razor deal as an example:
Get $5.00 Target gift card when you buy 2 Schick Hydro 5 razors

Buy 2 Schick Hydro 5 Razors $7.49 ea. ($14.98 total)
Internally the register subtracts $10.00 & thinks you’re paying only $4.98 (you still pay $14.98)
You have (2) $4.00/1 manufacturer’s coupons  to use ( 1 for each razor you bought)
The cashier scans your first $4.00 coupon bringing your total down to $.98
The cashier scans the 2nd $4.00 coupon and it only takes off $.98 – because if they took the whole $4.00 off it would make the total -$3.02
Final price: $14.98 – $4.98 (coupons) = $10.98 – get $5.00 gc = 2/5.98 ($2.49 ea.)

Here’s another example:
Get $5.00 Target gift card wyb 3 Dial body washes 24.0-oz.

Buy 3 Dial body washes $3.99 ($11.97 total)
Internally the register will subtract $10.00 & thinks you’re paying $1.97 (you still pay $11.97)
You have (3) $1.00/1 Dial body wash manufacturer’s coupons
The cashier scans your first coupon at $1.00, the second at $.97 and the third won’t scan.
Final price: $11.97-  $1.97 (coupons) = $10.00 – get $5.00 gc = 3/$5.00 ($1.67 ea.)
NOTE: If you had (3) Target store coupons for the Dial body wash the register would take them.

Here’s an example of what will work:
Get $5.00 Target gift card wyb 2 Clairol Perfect 10 Hair Color

Buy 2 Perfect 1o $8.99 ($17.98 total)
Internally the register subtracts $10.00 & thinks you’re paying $7.98 (you’re still paying $17.98)
You have (2) $3.00/1 coupons to use
The cashier scans both coupons leaving a balance of $2.98
Final price: $17.98 – $6.00(coupons) = $11.98 – get $5.00 gc = 2/$6.98 ($3.49 ea.)

Some important things to remember:

  • This new problem ONLY applies to gift card deals.
  • You’ll need to pretend (along with the register) that you’ve already given the cashier a $10.00 coupon to scan reducing your total and decreasing the amount of coupons you can use.
  • This new problem does NOT effect the usage of Target store coupons.  It only effects how you use manufacturer coupons. Always  USE YOUR TARGET COUPONS LAST so they aren’t subtracted bringing your total down even more before using your manufacturer coupons.
  • This new problem is NOT affected by the number of items purchased vs. number of coupons used.  It’s all about the value of products purchased vs. value of the coupons.
  • If you’re only buying the gift card items and want to use all of your manufacturer’s coupons you may have to buy additional items to get your total above zero after $10.00 discount and coupons.
    For Example:

FREE $5 Gift Card wyb any 3 Select Dial Soap or Body Wash Items $3.99

So I decide to buy 3 Dial Body Wash = $11.97
MINUS invisible $10 = $1.97. SO $1.97 is my magic number.
I have (3) $1/1 coupons I want to use = $3. This is more than my magic number, so I need the difference ($1.03) in merchandise to absorb my remaining coupon value. If I don’t- then the 1st coupon will scan fine, the 2nd will scan at .97 cents, and the 3rd at $0.00. So instead I buy a dozen eggs for $1.39 and all 3 coupons scan normal. Thanks Totally Target for this scenario!

Has anyone encountered this yet???

So why does it take $10 off of the total?

I have no idea. The manager of my Target didn’t even know it was doing it until I pointed out. I think it’s time to call corporate!

I haven’t had this problem yet. But tried to use the $5 off of 5 packages of Kraft Cheese an it was ringing up as only $2 off.

I just got back from Target and it happened to me! I bought 2 Schick razors for the Target gift card and when I checked out I gave the cashier (2) $4.00/1 coupons and the first on scanned fine but the second one only scanned for $.98. The manager fixed it for me. I also had a $1.00/3 Rotel coupon scan for $.82 the other day.

Maybe I’m not getting it but I’m failing to see the problem here. So basically we are getting a free $10 on any of the GC deals? So we can then save our coupons to use on something else? Am I missing why this is a problem?

No that’s not the case…oh how I wish it were lol!! You aren’t getting a $10.00 discount on anything. I really hate seeing consumers get ripped off. This is certainly something to be watchful of, especially with high shopping season kicking into gear.

    Thanks for the alert.
