If you're like me and love a good coffee house handcrafted beverage but don't love stopping in every single day, you probably make most of your coffee at home. We have invested in a few things to make our homemade coffee just as good as the $5 versions! It really saves money, as you can purchase all of your ingredients at the grocery store and online, vs paying high dollar prices for a Starbucks drink or beverage at your local coffee spot. These beverages always have a few key ingredients, inclduing frothed milk or cold foam.

How to make Pumpkin Foam for Coffee:
If you haven't tried to make any cold foam recipe in the past, lets start with the basics. Cold foam is basically frothed milk, to give a very simple description. It can be made in several ways with several different types of ingredients. You can also make this dairy free with ingredients such as almond milk, but in this post we are sticking with just mentioning different ways of making dairy based cold foam. Here are several common starters:
- Milk or skim milk – I find the best cold foam starts with just plain old milk!
- Heavy Whipping Cream- this will yield a very rich flavor and texture, and is what this recipe calls for
- Half and Half- This gives a medium texture, somewhat creamy but not too heavy. It is a mixture of cream and milk.
- Reddi-Whip- believe it or not, you can make cold foam coffee using the whipped cream topping out of the can! Try using the recipe first, however!
The next ingredient will be a sweetener. If you just froth or blend up regular milk, it will form tiny bubbles that you can mix into your coffee. However, it won't have much flavor. The typical cold foam you get at the coffee house has a sweet element blended in. Here are ingredients to add to the milk before blending, to get the real deal cold foam:
- Sweetened condensed milk– this recipe calls for this. It can also give a creamy texture and balances out strong flavors such as pumpkin. It's a great sweetener to use.
- Store bought syrups- We love Skinny Mixes, Torani, and even the Starbucks brand coffee syrups. Each one can be used as a cold foam sweetener instead of sugar or sweetened condensed milk.
- Granulated sugar or sweeteners- these work as well, but may not blend or dissolve as well as syrups or sweetened condensed milk. We recommend using sugar only if you have no other sweetener on hand. Start with a small amount and add more to taste!
- Make yoru own simple syrup- you can make syrups ahead, and refrigerate or can them.
How to Blend Cold Foam:
The main thing you will need to make your own cold foam at home something to blend with! Your favorite drinks at Starbucks are always blended by machine, not with a handheld whisk! So of course we will blend our cold ingredients at home the same way. You can hand whisk the first ingredients easily. Depending on what you have on hand in the kitchen, there are many ways to get that super foamy consistency for the finished product.
Here are some options:
- Milk frother– we have a hand frother (electric milk frother) from Amazon and love it for any kind of beverage. You can even mix protein drinks with it. It's a great small item to make these coffee recipes easy peasy.
- French Press- if you want to make other coffee drinks, a small French press allows you to make as much foam as you need for one coffee without a lot of fancy equipment.
- Blender- a small blender or drink blender can easily froth your cold milk or dairy ingredients.
Putting it all together:
To make your own Pumpkin Cold Foam, first you will need to prepare your coffee. You can start with iced coffee, or cold brew. Be sure to follow a cold brew recipe if you want authentic coffee house flavors! Most cold brew must be made ahead in a cold brew coffee maker, pitcher, or by refrigerating coffee after its brewed.
Before you're ready to serve, start your pumpkin cream. You will mix your dairy ingredients, and a small amount of vanilla syrup (or extract) and pumpkin puree. Using pumpkin puree is about the same as using real pumpkin.
We've all heard the discussion over pumpkin “flavored” drinks from coffee houses that don't actually include any real pumpkin. With homemade versions, you can optionally add real puree which is also a great way to use up any extra canned pumpkin puree in the fridge. I would not use pumpkin pie filling, which is a different product. This has fallen out of use over the years and it's actually harder to find now. Libby's or Best Choice Pumpkin puree are great canned products to try out.
Blend your mixture with your handheld milk frother (or using one of the alternate methods) and set aside.
How to Make Pumpkin Cold Foam Coffee:
Pour your prepared coffee concentrate into your mug or glass and add about 1/4 cup of water. If you need it stronger, start with less water. Add ice or crushed ice as desired, usually about half way full. I like to use a tall see through glass to watch the cold foam mix with the coffee!
Give your cold foam 1-2 more pulses with the milk frother or blender. Pour your pumpkin cold foam over the coffee gently, scooping out any additional froth from the top layer of the milk mixture.
Sprinkle with additional pumpkin spice for more pumpkin flavor, or add a cinnamon sticks or just drizzle with caramel syrup (ice cream topping type). The drizzle is my absolute favorite! Enjoy with a wide straw– and just remember, you may have a few requests from the family for their own coffee beverage, too!

This recipe is an easy way to enjoy the flavors of Starbucks Pumpkin Cream beverages without heading out to grab an expensive to-go coffee. As mentioned above, you can try this out with non-dairy milks such as coconut milk, nut milks and more. Be aware the results will vary when using alternative ingredients. Enjoy!
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 2 1/2- 3 tablespoon pumpkin puree
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 -2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
Cold Brew Coffee with Cold Foam:
- 1 cup cold brew coffee concentrate
- 1 cup cold brew coffee concentrate ¼ cup water
First, whisk together the whipping cream, vanilla and sweetened condensed milk. Next whisk in the pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice until it's smooth. Once done, you'll want to cover and place in the refrigerator until your ready to use.
Fill a glass or mug halfway with ice. Add the cold brew coffee concentrate and water. Mix well.
In your blender, pulse ½ cup of the pumpkin cream for around 10 seconds, or until it's fluffy and thick.
Last but not least, add the pumpkin cream cold foam to your iced coffee and sprinkle with additional pumpkin pie spice, if desired.
You can serve coffee iced or cold.
Keep in mind if you serve cold foam over hot coffee, the cold foam will warm up and will slightly cool down your coffee.
Drizzle with desired toppings!
