In life, we are often especially fixated on the really “big” gestures, both when it comes to showing our appreciation for our loved ones, and also when it comes to managing situations in our own lives and trying to pursue and achieve our goals in various ways. Let’s talk about how small gestures make the biggest impact.
Of course, big gestures and actions can certainly have a powerful impact, in various situations. Getting down on one knee and proposing to your partner is certainly likely to be a life changing event for both of you, and will probably also bear significantly more weight than any individual instance of you preparing breakfast, or saying a kind word.
All the same, however, it’s often the small things that make the biggest impact in life – both with regards to gestures like gift giving, and also with regards to the way we structure our days, the way we choose to pursue our goals, and all manner of other things.
Here are a few reasons why it is often the small things that make the biggest impact, when all is said and done.
Unless you’re in a pretty unusual situation, you will probably only marry your partner once – and many of the other big gestures that you might make to those close to you, will tend to come up occasionally at best, rather than constantly.
The simple fact is that the vast majority of the interactions that we have with those close to us are the kinds of interactions that are based primarily on small but meaningful gestures, rather than big and grandiose ones.
It’s remembering to contact a flower delivery service to properly commemorate Valentine’s Day, making a cup of coffee for your partner in the morning, paying them a compliment that you know will make a difference, and just being there in a supportive way, that will really define the everyday relationship you have.
The same is, of course, true with friends. Few of your interactions with your pals are going to be enormous one-of-a-kind gestures or experiences, and, mostly, your relationship with them will be defined by things like the fact that you’re willing to make time to hang out, joke around with each other, share some helpful advice when warranted, and so on.
Almost by definition, the gestures that make up the bulk of the experiences we have with those close to us, are likely to be the ones that have the greatest overall net impact on the way those relationships unfold, and the ways in which we relate to each other.
Following on from the previous point; small gestures typically “set the stage” for your interactions with other people – and even with yourself – more than large gestures typically will.
Generally speaking, unless you’ve done something terrible, or something truly life changing in the most positive way, the atmosphere, mood, and temperament surrounding your relationship or interactions with any given individual, will be determined mostly by the small gestures and actions that you routinely engage in when around them.
This is, of course, also true on a purely personal level as well.
If you are constantly feeling exhausted and want to feel a different way instead, it’s not likely to be that there’s going to be one decisive action that you can take, once off, that will make you feel as though you’re on top of the world and that will completely transform things.
Instead, it will be by adjusting your habitual daily actions that you are able to set the stage for a new energy to enter into your life. The actions that you will take will likely involve things like getting to bed earlier, working to optimise your circadian rhythms and practice better sleep hygiene, monitoring your consumption of caffeine and other stimulants, and so on. ivermectin fleas and ticks
Whenever you want to achieve an ambitious goal that you think might really transform your life, and move you onto a path that you really want to be on, it will be important to remember that all goals – more or less – are best achieved through consistent repetition of certain small actions, day after day.
Few if any great musicians have ever made a name for themselves by sitting down for a week and churning out a masterpiece album out of the blue, and then leaving it at that.
Far more commonly, those musicians will have to keep creating songs, engaging with their craft, playing around with their instruments, performing shows at out of the way venues, and making sure to stick with it day after day, without becoming overly distracted with the “end goal.”
In fact, according to many great artists and entrepreneurs alike, a big part of the key to success actually resides in being able to “fall in love with the process,” rather than always being on the lookout for the “one big action” that’s going to change everything.
Sometimes it will be one big action that will change everything, but generally speaking, it will be the small routines and habits that you have, and stick with consistently, that have a powerful cumulative effect in getting you to where you want to be.
The writer Charles Duhigg, author of the book “The Power of Habit,” Has written about a concept that he calls “keystone habits,” and which might just be at the core of the most successful transformations that a person could make in their life.
Put simply, keystone habits are the habits that – although often small by themselves – create a positive cascade effect by motivating and entrenching various other habits, thereby causing a positive domino effect that can really make a dramatic difference in a short space of time.
Things like taking up an exercise routine, or getting your wake and sleep routines right, will be examples of the kinds of keystone habits that can cause a lot of other elements of your life to fall into place in a positive way.
Of course, a similar dynamic happens here with regards to other things, as well.
If you want a close and supportive relationship with your partner, typically getting a few key elements of your relationship right will help to ensure that things, as a whole, progress in a good direction while also helping you to avoid some of the most detrimental pitfalls.
Things like a commitment to honesty and communication can make a lot of other parts of the puzzle fall into place.
One of the really powerful things about your small habitual actions – which people don’t often think about directly – is the fact that the kinds of actions that you take on a repeated basis, day after day, will typically shape your sense of self identity in a range of very substantial ways.
If you want to be an artist, a big part of the journey is creating a situation where you can step into the self-identity of an artist, believe it, and feel comfortable moving forward. And, the best way to get there is very likely to be consistently painting, sculpting, drawing, or whatever else it is you are artistically interested in.
The same principle can hold true for a lot of things that are harder to pin down, as well.
Although it’s obviously not always so clear-cut – If you want to have self respect, you could do a lot worse than engaging in regular behaviours that give you a sense of self-respect, and avoiding the ones that would make you view yourself in a negative light.
The way we perceive ourselves typically has a lot to do with what it is we are capable of achieving in our lives, and it also has a significant impact on the way we treat those around us, too.
On a purely pragmatic level, it’s always worth mentioning that small gestures are typically more sustainable than large ones.
This fact is, more or less, the underlying basis of the Japanese concept of “kaizen,” which is often presented as a commitment to systematic and ongoing improvement, with an emphasis on “getting 1% better every day.”
On any given day, there are likely to be various things that you can identify and could do to help make a particular situation better – even just slightly better.
But it will be very difficult, if not impossible most of the time, to keep coming up with incredible and once-in-a-lifetime gestures, or definitive actions and initiatives that will transform your destiny in one clear sense or another.
When you’re not sure what to do next, Small Gestures will typically come to your rescue.
