When the girls surprised me and said, “We’re taking you to Eskimo Joe’s for your 50th birthday,” I was so excited to spend the day with my girls. I mean, what better way to ring in half a century than in Stillwater’s most iconic hangout and get an Eskimo Joe's free meal?

It turned out this was the perfect birthday plan. That day, I got to be part of Joe’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2025. If you hit your own 50th birthday and visit Joe’s that day? You get an Eskimo Joe's free meal. You get a free commemorative glass. And they hand you a 50th anniversary T-shirt, like you’ve joined a secret club. Oh, and did I mention the cheese fries?

The girls guided me to a table near the window and ordered our food and drinks to celebrate my 50th birthday. We laughed about my “big 5-0.” Then the sweet peppered cheese fries arrived. They were everything I hoped: warm, cheesy, slightly spicy, dripping with flavor. I may have licked the plate (don’t judge). We always have so much fun together and thoroughly enjoyed the sweet peppered cheese fries.

History of Eskimo Joe's For Their 50th Anniversary

Eskimo Joe’s didn’t start as a legendary restaurant—it began as a dare stirred on a lazy Sunday. In July 1975, two Oklahoma State graduates, Steve File and Stan Clark, shook hands and leased a two-story building. They had this crazy idea: “Let’s open a bar with the coldest beer in town.” Steve suggested the name Eskimo Joe’s. Stan agreed. And they hired a freshman art student, Bill Thompson, to draw a logo. That’s how Joe and Buffy were born, and now they are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025.

Walking through the front door at 501 W. Elm feels like stepping into a lively memory. The place pulses with energy — music, laughter, the hum of conversations. You'll see Joe’s smiling face, Buffy the dog, and shelves of T-shirts that show up around the world. (Yes, Eskimo Joe’s shirts are a thing and you’ll see them in places you never expected.) Eskimo Joe’s is more than a restaurant. It’s a thread in Stillwater’s story. Over the past 50 years, people from all over have made pilgrimages here. It has been called “Stillwater’s Jumpin’ Little Juke Joint.”

Joe’s T-shirts are among the most collectible in the country and have often been mentioned in the same breath as the collectible Hard Rock Cafe shirts, cementing their status in pop culture history. Some people buy the anniversary shirt every year! Get the 50th anniversary tee shirt here. You may also join the Wall of Fame by submitting a picture of you or a friend wearing a Joe's shirt or displaying something from Joe's. It can be from a faraway place or as close as your house.
