Returning gifts after the holidays can be a hassle but it helps to know what to expect when doing so. Here’s the return policies for 23 top stores courtesy of savings and consumer trends expert Jeanette Pavini!

  1. Amazon Holiday Return Policy

If you ordered directly from Amazon (no third-party sellers) between November 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016, those items may be returned until January 31, 2017 for a full refund, though you’re still subject to their other return guidelines.

If you ordered something from a third-party seller, you’re still eligible for this same holiday return policy unless otherwise stated in the seller’s individual return policy. You can find more details on the return policies for items not shipped by Amazon here.

  1. American Eagle Holiday Returns

Though there’s no return period listed on their site, American Eagle has two ways for you to return any merchandise to them. Your best bet is to return your item to a store near you, since this is free. You can do this even if you bought your items online, over the phone, or in a different store. Be sure to keep your invoice or receipt and bring the credit card you used for the original purchase. If you don’t have a receipt or invoice, you’ll still be credited the current price of the item in the form of an AE gift card (however they will not refund you shipping fees).

You can also ship your items back. Just put your items back in their original packaging if possible, note the items your returning and the reason(s) why on your invoice, and send them back via a mail carrier of your choice.

  1. Aeropostale Return Policy

If your Aeropostale merchandise hasn’t been washed, worn, or is defective, you can return or exchange it within 60 days of the date your purchased it as long as you have a receipt or gift receipt.

Normally, the Apple Store, both online and in-store, offers a 14-day return policy on any item. For the holidays, Apple has expanded this window: If an item was purchased between November 10 and December 25, 2016 you have until January 8, 2017 to return or exchange it.

  1. Barnes and Noble Holiday Returns

If you purchased something from Barnes and Noble between November 14 and December 31, 2016, it’s refundable or exchangeable through January 31, 2016. Be sure to save your receipt or gift receipt!

  1. Best Buy Holiday Return Policy

Almost every purchase made at Best Buy in November and December 2016 can be returned through January 15, 2017. If you made a purchase between October 30 and December 31, 2016, you have an extended return period that lasts through January 15, 2017, too, however this excludes any items purchased with a third-party contract, like mobile phone carrier contracts, AppleCare monthly plans, DirecTV, and more. Of course, all other terms and conditions of Best Buy’s Return & Exchange Promise also apply

If you’re a My Best Buy Elite or Elite Plus member, rejoice! You’ve got even more time to return or exchange any holiday items. Elite members can return or exchange items purchased between October 30 and December 31, 2016 up to January 30, 2017. Elite Plus members can return or exchange items purchased during that same timeframe through February 14, 2017. (Previously mentioned exclusions apply, though!)

If you’re returning a gift with a gift receipt, you’re eligible for an exchange or a refund at the gift receipt price — this refund will come in the form of a JCPenney gift card.
