  1. Opt for an AirBNB or VRBO-

If you're ok thinking outside the box for your overnight stay, you can save big by reserving a condo, a home or even room on one of these popular websites.

We have used the VRBO site (Vacation Rentals By Owner) a couple times in the past. While this isn't a review, I can honestly say we had no problems with our rentals.  The second time we reserved a condo it ended up being in a more industrial area of town, so my personal advice is to ask a friend or acquaintance (Facebook contacts can be a great help for this) and ask around on which area of town to stay in.  Airbnb is also gaining in popularity!

2. Look at Groupon-

For popular resorts or travel destinations, Groupon can really help save money.  This is our go-to for Great Wolf Lodge and Branson, MO deals.  They also have ski resort deals.

Be aware that most travel dates do blackout the weekends (or charge a slightly higher rate). However, overall you will see some savings over traditional hotel booking.

3.  Check in on a Weekday-

Along the same lines, you can see better hotel rates in general if you can check in during the work-week.  This isn't always an option of course, but if you're road tripping on the weekend, bump it a day forwards and see if you can check in on Monday instead of Sunday! Often, rates for your entire stay will be lower.

4. Avoid Holiday Travel for that Family Getaway-

If your goal is to stick to a budget and still have fun, consider avoiding popular travel dates like holidays.  Room rates (just like airfare) will take a big spike in price around major holidays, including Memorial Day weekend and even July 4th and Labor Day!

Unless the holiday is a big reason you're traveling, going a week before or after will help you avoid high fees and of course… all the crowds!

5. Get the Most Out of Your Room

Travel expenses can't be totally avoided– that's a no brainer! However, you can maximize what you can get from your room if you do your research.  Several months ahead of your vacation, scout out hotel websites and their amenities:

  • Does your hotel offer kids eat free or stay free deals?
  • Offer hot breakfast?
  • Free parking (very important with downtown hotels!)
  • Shuttle services, especially if you're flying in
  • Low cost restaurants nearby?
  • Fridge and microwave included?

After traveling with family over the years, we've learned the amenities included with a hotel can sometimes save a ton of money, even if you can't find Cheap Hotel Rooms! A free hot breakfast is a big one for us.  If you have smaller children, a fridge and microwave for snacks and heat-up foods will keep you from spending extra money on food.
