We have always loved fruit but this year on a quest for a healthier family we have incorporated more fruits in our diet, especially apples. As part of the Walmart Mom program we were asked if we would like to try the Pinata apples available at Walmart. Of course with all the changes we are making we said yes!
So what is a Pinata apple and why is it so special?
Pinata is a new apple variety from Washington state. It's a cross between Golden Delicious, Cox's Orange Pippin and the Duchess of Oldenburg varieties. It originated in the 1970's. While it was born in Germany, Piñata now thrives in Stemilt's eastern Washington orchards. They now own the exclusive rights to growing and marketing this type of apple. The Pinata apple has a thin skin and have a crisp bite.
Pinata apples are grown with flavor and quality in mind. This apple thrives in eastern Washington's arid climate, where long, sunny days and cool nights precede harvest giving each Pinata apple a balanced sweet-tart flavor and crisp texture.
While the Pinata apples were a big hit with the Walmart Moms and their kids my family thought they were to tart for us. My kids are really picky though so I would suggest that you try these for yourself. For more information about Pinata apples go to PinataApple.com.
