Knowing Your Lawn Mower Basics:

Each spring we notice the grass and trees seem to bloom suddenly! If it's that time of year, we know gardening and lawn care are just around the corner. I have to say, my husband and I love being outside this time of year. Even on those cooler mornings or scorching hot afternoons, it's a welcome change from sitting inside after all the winter weather.

I am blessed since my husband does almost all of the actual lawn mower work. However, there are several things us newbies need to know if we are starting the spring mowing the lawn ourselves. I learned a few good basics along the way, so I'm glad to share them with you. I am also excited to share info on Sears PartsDirect.

1. Know your lawn mower type and model, and replace blades as needed

Prior to mowing your lawn for the first time in the spring, be sure to look your lawn mower over and make sure everything is in place and in working order. Check the lawn mower blade to see if it needs to be replaced.

Sears PartsDirect is ideal for anyone doesn't want to spend forever searching for a certain lawn mower part. The easiest way to find parts for your mower is to type your mower’s model number in the search box at the top of the Sears PartsDirect website or on the mower parts page. This will bring you to your mower’s model page; once there, you can quickly find the part you need. The model page also has diagrams that show where the part is located.

Typically at the beginning of the year we replace the blade, unless it happens to be something we just replaced prior to putting the lawn mower away in the fall.

2. Read the Owner's Manual:

There are so many types of lawn mowers! Keeping the manual from year to year will prevent you from guessing on maintenance. However, if you’ve lost your owner’s manual, you can download a new one for many models at PartsDirect – even if you didn’t purchase your product from Sears.

2. Check the Oil

Just like in a vehicle, a lawn mower needs the right amount of oil, and correct type. You can find this information in your owner's manual. Doing a good visual check of the oil to make sure it's free of contamination and debris is a good idea.

3. Check Air Filter

Air filters can get dirty and need to be cleaned or replaced. Check your manual for the recommended length of time to use your lawn mower air filter, but in general this is a good once a year thing to do just like replacing the blade. For rural areas or if you're running into a lot of dirt and sand with your mower, this is something you want to check much more often.

4. Keep things clean

We all have that family member who takes pride in equipment and keeps them spotless! If that's you, go for it! However, if you're just wanting to get the lawn mowed and move on with your day, one good habit is still to try to clean out any grass under the mower– prior to use.

Never try to clean the mower undercarriage when the mower has been used recently, since it can be extremely hot. Grass gets stuck around the blade and under the mower, and can cause problems later on. Give it a good check underneath prior to getting your mower out for the season, especially. Be aware of spiders and anything that might have made a home inside!

5. Change Spark Plugs or Consider a Professional Lawn Mower Tune Up

Finally, one other thing you can consider changing prior to the start of the mowing season is the spark plugs. If this is out of your comfort zone, you can definitely consult a professional. Sears PartsDirect does offer in-home repairs on riding lawnmowers only.
