What to Pack in Your Hospital Go Bag
When your loved one is hospitalized multiple times, like our adult son has been, you quickly learn that being prepared makes all the difference. In the middle of a health crisis, the last thing you want to do is scramble around the house trying to remember what to bring. That’s why we created a dedicated Hospital Go Bag, always ready to grab and go.
Everyone’s needs will be a little different, but this list is what we put together through real experience. It’s packed with items that brought our son physical comfort and emotional peace during uncertain and exhausting hospital stays.

What to Pack in Your Hospital Go Bag
Here’s what we keep in ours:
- Soft joggers – Easy to wear, non-restrictive, and comfortable for tests or walking the halls.
- Soft pajama pants – Great for sleeping and lounging during long stays.
- T-shirts (2) – Keep it simple and soft; something familiar brings comfort.
- Warm socks – Hospital rooms are often chilly.
- Underwear (2 pairs) – A fresh pair makes a huge difference in how you feel.
- Natural deodorant – Gentle and chemical-free.
- Natural toothpaste & toothbrush – Keeping up with oral hygiene helps maintain a sense of normalcy.
- Facial moisturizer – Hospitals are dry and can irritate the skin.
- Chapstick – A must-have for dry lips, especially when on certain meds or oxygen.
- Nausea relief band – A natural way to help with queasiness from medications or procedures.
- Brush – A basic necessity for staying groomed.
- Phone charging cords – Consider getting a long one (6 ft or more).
- Blanket & pillow – A piece of home can make the sterile hospital feel more comforting.
- Stainless steel cup with straw – Keeps drinks cold or hot, and a straw helps if mobility is limited.
- Travel neck pillow – Especially helpful for sleeping upright or in waiting areas.
- Soft eye mask – Blocks out harsh hospital lighting for better rest.We recommend the Manta Sound Sleep Mask.
- Earplugs – Help drown out the noise of machines and hallway chatter. The corded kind is great to avoid loss.
- Warmie or heating pad – Soothes aches and gives comfort. We love the sloth and the peanut.
- Tote bag large enough to hold it all – A zippered or structured one works best for keeping things together.

Optional Items You May Want to Include
Depending on your situation, consider these additional items:
- Copies of important documents – Insurance cards, a list of current medications, or medical history.
- Notebook and pen – To jot down questions for the doctor or instructions from staff.
- Entertainment – A book, puzzle book, or tablet with downloaded shows or audiobooks.
- Snacks – Easy-to-eat items like granola bars, crackers, or trail mix.
- Essential oils or roll-ons – For calming aromatherapy. (use code: CONSUMERQUEENFREE )
- Hand sanitizer and wipes – Hospital germs are real.
- Extra cash or change – For vending machines or parking meters.
- Compression socks – Especially if they’ll be in bed for long periods.
- Slippers or easy-on shoes – For bathroom trips or short walks.
A hospital go bag isn’t just a practical necessity—it’s an emotional lifeline. It provides a small sense of control when everything else feels out of your hands. Whether you’re packing for yourself, a child, or an adult loved one, having one ready can make future hospital stays a little less overwhelming.
