It's September and although the weather is still pretty warm in most places, it won't be this way for long. Winter is coming and you'll need your car to be in top shape to get through those freezing temperatures, snow and icy streets.

The folks at Sears invited me to their auto service center so I could check out how they perform tune-ups and take care of their customer's cars. I never knew there was so much involved beyond changing the spark plugs!

Most people put car maintenance off until the last minute and that could mean a safety issue for your family as well as cost you lots of money in the long run. Having regular tune-ups on your car can save you big bucks where gas is concerned. Did you know that your air filter determines about 90% of your gas mileage?

Your car's air filter is one of the things Sears will check during the tune-up. As you can see from the above photo, the car owner waited too long and the air filter is very dirty. That probably cost them quite a bit at the gas pump! Unfortunately, many of us are so busy that we don't get our cars tuned-up as regularly as we should.

Here's a few signs I learned to look for that will tell me my car may be in need of a tune-up

  • check engine light comes on
  • car has a rough idle
  • decrease in gas milage

The trick is to get your tune-up BEFORE any of the above happens. It will save you time and money in the long run.

Why get your car tuned up at Sears? Sears has experienced personnel to handle your needs and they have one of coolest tools to help them assess any problems your car may have. Devin was very patient with me as he explained how the Genisys  Touch works and how they use it during your car's tune-up.

The Genisys Touch connects wirelessly to most cars and will diagnose any problems it might be experiencing. It can also tell them if your car has experienced any failures in the past. It can tell them exactly where the problem is/was!

Below is a short video on how the Genisys Touch works.

While you're at Sears getting your tune-up have them perform a courtesy vehicle inspection. They'll check your car's tires, lights, wipers, battery, belts, fluids, shocks, brakes and much more all for FREE!

I really enjoyed my visit at Sears automotive and I'm looking forward to another lesson on car maintenance. Stay tuned for my next post!
