What Oil Pulling Can Do For You

I tried oil pulling for several weeks awhile back because I had heard of the benefits and wanted to see if it really worked.  I was pleasantly surprised.  My mouth felt fresher and cleaner and my teeth looked whiter.  The only reason I quit is because I got lazy.

Some of the benefits of oil pulling include whiter teeth, cavity and gum disease prevention, fresher breath, stronger teeth and gums, and alleviation of headaches, skin issues and sinus issues.  Because oil pulling literally pulls the toxins from our mouths as well as our bodies we are able to have overall better health.  And it's super simple.

The How to on Oil Pulling

  • The first thing you have to do is choose an oil to use.  I chose unrefined, organic coconut oil.  And because it's coconut it didn't taste too bad either.  You can choose any vegetable-based oil you'd like.
  • Take anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon of your oil and swish around your mouth for 15-20 minutes.  I'd recommend getting started with 5-10 minutes and working your way up because it does take a little getting used to.  (Edit- or even less if you've never tried it or are sensitive to new textures). The flavor of the coconut oil wasn't bad but it took some time to get used to the oily feeling in my mouth.
  • Make sure you don't swish to vigorously because the oil will grow as it pulls out the toxins and draws in saliva.  DO NOT swallow the oil!  Otherwise you'll be swallowing all the toxins you just got rid of!
  • Spit the oil in the trash once you're done (NOT the sink!  You don't want it to harden in the pipes and clog it up!) and then you can brush your teeth as normal.  And make sure you do this all on an empty stomach.  I did it first thing in the morning while I was getting ready for the day.

If you're looking for an easy way for better oral and overall health, give oil pulling a try!  Get those toxins out!
