benefits of giving your dog coconut oil

As we know, coconut oil is an extremely healthy resource for us humans but have you considered giving it to your pets?  If not, you should!  There are so many benefits in giving coconut oil to your dog.  Coconut oil improves any dog’s skin and coat, improves digestion, reduces allergic reactions and aids in dental health among other things! Many vets and researchers are now recommending regular use of coconut oil for our pets.

If you do decide to feed coconut oil to your fur-baby be sure to start with a little and gradually increase the amount. Giving too much too soon can cause digestive and detox problems.  A good start would be 1/4 tsp. per day for small dogs and 1 tsp. per day for large dogs.  Make sure you give it with their food.  My mom has been giving her giant Newfoundland/Border Collie mix coconut for quite awhile now and he just loves it.  Most dogs love the taste so it should be no problem getting them to eat it.

If you want to apply coconut oil directly to the skin to treat a rash or wound simply rub the oil in well and then cover with a rag or towel to let it soak in before they try to lick it off.  If it's in a location that they can't reach then you don't have to wrap it.  Coconut oil disinfects cuts and wounds and also helps it heal faster.  My mom has used coconut oil on many occasions to treat a rash or bug bites on her dog.

HERE are some great coconut oil choices.  And as always, be sure to talk to your veterinarian before beginning something new!
