12 Easy Ways to Freshen Up Your Space for Spring

Spring is the perfect time of year to freshen up your home, inside and out. The weather is better and you can start planting seeds again. Bring the outside in with a few floral additions to your interior, and fill your home with fresh spring scents. Nature is in bloom so why not encourage a few wild visitors into your yard? Make a homemade bird feeder, a bee hotel, or start a fun new upcycling project. Spring is the best time of year to get creative and do DIY. Plant Some Seeds:

Spring is the ideal time of year to get back out in your yard to do some gardening. Plant seeds and watch them bloom over the next few weeks. If you want to get your children involved you could start some seedlings inside first to draw their interest.

You could get a couple of new plants to add a touch of greenery to your home. Plants create a calming atmosphere and make your space appear more appealing and alive.

If you would like to tempt more wildlife into the garden you could feed the birds using homemade recipes and even a DIY bird feeder. You can make bird feed from leftover scraps or prepare suet “cakes” with a mix of oats, nuts, and cornmeal, all sealed together with suet or coconut oil. The bird feeder itself can be made using a recycled plastic bottle. Simply poke a few holes in the bottle and fill it with bird seed. You could attach a couple of sticks or even broken pencils to make a perch for the birds while they eat.

Build a Bee Hotel:

Another fun DIY project related to wildlife you can try is building a bee hotel. It’s quite easy. All you need is a plank of untreated wood and some reeds and bamboo canes. You should be able to recycle this from old furniture or wooden crates. It’s up to you how fancy you want to make it. New Window Coverings:

If your windows could do with a bit of TLC it might be time to get some new shutters or blinds. These will let the spring light in nicely and you can leave them partially closed to avoid the glare on particularly sunny days. Natural light is important and now that the spring is here you’ll be able to make the most of it in your home as well as outside. 

Lighter Layers:

Now the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to ditch those heavy blankets and throw pillows. Switch them out for some lighter spring fabrics and patterns. Choose materials such as cotton and linen for a fresher feel. You could even invest in a new set of linens for your bed and freshen up your bedroom for spring as well.

Get rid of your old air fresheners and sprays as these aren’t very environmentally-friendly. Instead, opt for diffusers with essential oils for spring. These will give your home a lovely spring scent. Floral botanicals are ideal. You can even DIY your own diffusers at home. Buy a recycled dark glass bottle and add a few drops of your favorite essential oils. You can create your own recipes. Several essential oils also work well as an insect repellent. These include citronella, catnip, lavender, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. You can blend these into creams or use them in your diffuser.

Now that the temperatures are more comfortable there’s no excuse not to ventilate your home. Ventilating is the cheapest and most eco-friendly way to ensure clean air circulates. There are also several health benefits of ventilation. It helps to remove dust, bacteria, and allergens from the air. It will also freshen up your home instantly and you can enjoy breathing clean natural air for a change, rather than using heaters or air conditioning. The easiest way to ventilate your home is by leaving your windows open during the warmest times of the day. 

Reduce Clutter:

It’s the season for a good spring cleaning session and it’s never a bad time for mindful decluttering. Get rid of all your duplicate items, clothes, and household stuff you never use. You can donate this to charity if it's in good condition. It’s easy to find your local goodwill online. Reducing clutter will create more space in your home and make it much easier to clean. It’s also a stress-relieving activity. Many people feel a connection between decluttering their homes and ridding their minds of cluttering thoughts. You’ll definitely feel a sense of satisfaction afterward.

If you’re the creative type then Spring is the perfect time of year for a new upcycling project. You can repurpose just about any unused household item and turn them into something new. Now that it’s Spring you’ll want to make the most of your outside space. Inspect your patio, if you have one, or decking. Check if it needs cleaning, resealing, or replacing. You might also want to invest in some new patio furniture. This could be your upcycling project, for example. Either revamp your patio furniture or buy some second-hand to and add a touch of your own personal style to it.
