Before I tell you guys what is going on, I thought I'd give you a little background on my husband and my mom. In 2005 my DSCN0059husband was rushed to the emergency room on Easter morning and was later diagnosed with a degenerative disease called “ankylosing spondylitis”. Our life was totally about to change. Since there is no cure for this disease we have spent lots of hours in and out of the hospital, several surgeries and more meds than I can count on my fingers. The Remicade infusions that he takes are $8,000 every 6 weeks. This is just one of his many meds .Without insurance it would be a scary situation.

My mom has has Klippel-Feil Syndrome which she has had from birth.  Basically she has fusion of the last 2 cervical and all of the thoracic vertebrae which causes Scoliosis. The last 3 ribs in front are also fused. She also has a splitting of the Spinal Cord in the cervical area about 1 to 2 cm.They told my mom she would never walk, but grandmother put my mom in a snow suit and stuffed towels down the back and taught her how to walk. My mom could have been on disability since birth , but my mom is a strong woman and would not let this disease get the best of her. She went to college and became a Labor & Delivery Nurse. In 2009 my mom got very sick because a patient who was selfish and checked herself into Labor & Delivery because she had Pneumonia and didn't want to wait in the ER. (The Hospital is not supposed to take those kinds of patients on that floor due to the babies) and mom had to go on disability due to her lungs.

IMG_0311In Jan. of 2010 we made the decision to have my mom move in with us. Because of the situation of being on disability with no insurance because it is the law that you must be on disability for 2 years to get insurance it was hard for my mom to financially stay in her house. Not only that someone tried to break into her house twice while she was at home! Many of you have wondered why I haven't been as active lately so I just wanted to give you some answers to what was going on!

We got good news today! We found a house, they accepted our offer and we got the loan! So now all we have to do is get our house ready to put on the market! I am so excited! My mom is going to be such a big help! I will no longer have to worry about Daniel being at home now that I have a registered Nurse living with us. She is a great couponer and does a ton of behind the scenes work here on CQ so I hope to be saving even more money! She will be able to also take the kids to school until Taylor starts driving. Did I mention she is also a good cook?

Here is a Pic of the house we are getting! If you are in the Oklahoma area and are looking for a house here are the details of ours!

  9. Danielle said it so well!

Ditto, congrats on the new house – it’s beautiful, I love all the light and brightness, will match your personality! Hope that your old house sells soon – it’s beautiful too….

Ditto, I appreciate all the work you put in, I’ll add appreciation of your integrity. I won a major prize in one of your contests so I know that you’re honest!

I hope your entire “royal” family will be happy in the new home. Is your mom the “Queen Mum”? Is that what they called the mom in England?

    Serious, congrats and best wishes.

  14. Wow! I won’t be complaining about anything in my life after reading your story. I hope you and your family continue to have the strength to deal with what life throws at you. You have an inspiring positive attitude.

Moving tips: Start packing now! We used those colored circle stickers to label our boxes for the movers, along with marking the boxes. Even if you are doing it yourself and with friends, put up a chart at the entranceway, ex. Black circle = garage, green = kitchen, etc…. For the Bedrooms we had to take apart the beds, mirrors, misc. and taped paper that said Bdrm 1, Bdrm 2, etc.. and also put signs up by the doors. The movers loved it and the different bed frames and headboards did not get mixed up. Good luck on your move-I hope you have good weather!

  18. How wonderful. Sounds like the Lord is really blessing your family.
The best tip I have for moving is to label every box, even if you think you will remember what is in it. Also put where you want the boxes put in your new home. The things you will need first like cereal bowls, spoons and the coffee maker, toilet paper, soap etc.. will need a special notation on the box.
Congratulations on the new home and the addition of your mom.

  27. Good luck with the move and selling the old house and all that stuff. How exciting for you all! Sounds like you have made a great decision as a family. It really is a shame that more families don’t do the larger extended families in one home as often here in the USA anymore.

  39. Thank you so much for the information you provide on ConsumerQueen.com. I have learned so much from your website and wish you all well in your new home!

Regarding your move, one thing I’ve always recommended to friends is to pack one box with ALL of the bed linens you will need for the first night as well as one set of towels for each person. Then pack a suitcase (or box) that has at least the clothes and tolietries for the next day for each person, including soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. These items need to travel with you in YOUR CAR! Even my mother-in-law loved the idea when she moved and said it definitely made the move less stressful the first night!

Last tip: If you plan to use newspapers for wrapping/packing, another idea is to individually pack dishes and breakables in plastic grocery bags before wrapping in newspaper. It keeps the breakables that don’t need washing free of newsprint and ready to shelve in your new home!

God Bless You and your family!

  47. Your attitude is great! I had an anuerysm which caused a stroke when I was 35.(Now I’m 41) My husband has psoratic authitis, and psoraisis,–painful enough but then his foot slipped (it was raining)when entering his Semi-truck and he has a total of ten different disks messed up in his back.
I was in a blue funk because of all the hospitalizations etc both of us were having. Feeling horribly sorry for myself and having a pity party just for Kat, thinking about how my right side doesn’t move right, I am too young to have to deal with this, why does Mike have to be in such pain etc. When I got a phone call from a friend that a 15 year old boy from my church was diagnosed with cancer. He died later that year.
Never again have I complained even to myself about all this. My children are healthy and Mike and I are alive, God is good!!!
I hope you have many wonderful years in your new home!!

He lives in Oregon; I live in Washington. He called me and I don’t know what to say or what to tell him.

  59. Kirstein,

The best thing you can do is just encourage him. People who have this disease feel so bad that they want to spend most days in bed. You want to encourage him to get up and do something. This is the best thing you can do! It will really help them. Also help watch how much medication they are taking! Theoir body gets used to the meds and sometimes they think they need more! Check out the link I posted to read up on his disease! Encourage him to stay away from foods that have starches in them. It seems to flair up the AS. Email us if you ever neede anything!

  71. Forgot I have a packing tip! There is a plastic wrap you can use to close smaller boxes, wrap kitchen utensils in a bundle (keeps them from getting jumbled), etc. I can’t remember what it’s called…but it’s like Saran Wrap on a big roll with a handle. You can buy it at Lowes and Home Depot (Lowes has it with packing supplies near the home storage section). If you have several small things that you can stack, like photo boxes, you can put several together and wrap them all together so they can be carried as one. We used it when we came here a year ago and it was awesome! Also, look for sticky bubble wrap that comes in a roll and tears off in sheets! Awesome for dishes! I’ll be getting these things myself soon. Hubby’s work in OKC is done and we are leaving Yukon to go home to Montana at the end of February.

  79. Congrats on getting your new home! And so glad your mom will be coming to stay with you. I’m thinking of all the bonding that will be happening.

So sorry about her having to go on disability because of someone’s selfishness and also about your husband’s pain.

Oh the strength you are having as a woman, daughter and wife.
    *HUGS*
