Spices: Kitchen Hacks You Need to Know!
Here is a Tip that could save your spice's life! I made this mistake for a long time. I lived in a small apartment where the kitchen was so tiny that we had to have a dining table that folded and the microwave was on top of the fridge.
We certainly didn't have a lot of room to work with in the kitchen. Now of course, things have changed and I have a nice spice organization setup. You can read more about how I completely revolutionized my kitchen spices here!
Back then — with limited counter space and cupboard space– I stored my spices above the stove. It was a convenient place. Little did I know that it was doing damage to them! I have actually seen a lot of people store spices on and around their stoves since that's where you end up using them most often.
I've since learned that humidity, light and heat will cause herbs and spices to lose their flavor.
It will help your spices last longer to store them in a cool, dark place.
Store in Glass:
Most often, if you are a frugal shopper like I am, spices are purchased in those plastic containers. This is fine for a while but if you really want to preserve the flavor of your spices, consider storage in glass.
Glass does not interact with the material inside the container at all. And, it's more air-tight than most plastic containers are. Especially those flip open lids! I always find someone else has left the plastic lid partially open. This isn't a big deal to me, and to be honest I am not THAT OCD… but it will impact the overall quality of spices over time.
When we reorganized our spice collection we went to glass containers. This is definitely somewhat of an investment if your budget is tight. However, it's very much a lifesaver for me when I'm short on cooking time and trying to find a certain spice. They don't quite hide as well now! Since we numbered them, they all have their own place.
Throw Out Spices When they Expire:
Spices have a longer shelf life than most foods in our pantry. This is great, but if you find yourself still using that Tarragon or Cilantro you got at the bridal shower or housewarming party five years ago– It's time to TOSS!
Going through your spices is a great spring cleaning task and it will help you make sure none are expired. No one wants to risk making flavorless foods or especially risking illness due to expired products. As with any kitchen staple, mold and other things can contaminate stored items over time. Don't risk it!
