National Strawberry Day!

Today is National Strawberry Day and we decided to explore the virtues of this juicy sweet fruit!

Fun Strawberry Facts:
  • Strawberries are one of the more fragrant fruits, they belong to the rose family.
  • Strawberries are grown in nearly every corner of the Earth except for the most frozen southern and northern areas.
  • Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, they're also a good source of folic acid, potassium and fiber.
  • Strawberries are fat free and only 55 calories per cup.

The best time to pick strawberries is late April to August.  They bruise easy so don't overfill your buckets or pick on a hot day unless you plan to eat them right away. Don't wash them until you are ready to eat – moisture causes mold and spoilage quick! Strawberries freeze well, just remove the green leafy tops before popping in a bag for the freezer.
