Thanksgiving Movies on Philo: What to Watch After Dinner
Looking for Thanksgiving movies on Philo? Once dinner is over, I’m happy to let somebody else handle the drama—as long as it’s happening on the television.
Thanksgiving brings back memories of Grandma Ina’s cooking and the family dishes we look forward to all year. After the food, the visiting, and hopefully a little help with the dishes, a movie sounds like a pretty good way to finish the day.
We have a paid Philo subscription, but you don’t necessarily need one to try the service. Philo also offers free, ad-supported channels. Check which viewing option applies to the movie or show you want.

Does Philo Have Free and Paid Options?

Yes. Philo offers a Free Channels experience with no credit card required, alongside paid subscriptions. Its free channels are also included with paid plans. Free Channels and a free trial of a paid plan are different things, so check which option you’re choosing. See Philo’s explanation of Free Channels.
For our Thanksgiving watchlist, I would start with the movies below. Philo’s listings can change, and a title page doesn’t always mean a movie is available to play immediately. Check your account for on-demand viewing, upcoming airings, or recording options before settling everyone on the couch.
Listings reviewed November 8, 2026. Exact Thanksgiving airtimes and immediate playback availability have not been confirmed for every title.
Thanksgiving Movies on Philo: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
For the adults who could use a laugh about holiday travel
Steve Martin and John Candy play two very different travelers trying to make it home for Thanksgiving. Delays, mishaps, and an increasingly unlikely partnership turn the trip into the kind of journey you would much rather watch than experience.
This would be my starting point for an adults’ Thanksgiving movie night. Getting dinner on the table suddenly sounds manageable compared with getting these two home.
Philo’s listing identifies it as included with its Essential and Bundle+ paid plans. It is rated R, with adult language and situations, so check suitability before choosing it for a mixed-age gathering. Check viewing and recording options on Philo.
Soul Food — Free to Watch on Philo
For an adults’ movie night about family and the traditions around the table
In this 1997 family drama, a grandmother’s illness disrupts the Sunday dinners that have held her family together. Her daughters face old rivalries while her grandson tries to bring everyone back to the table.
The story centers on Sunday dinners, but that connection between food and family makes it a fitting choice for Thanksgiving weekend. With how much Grandma Ina’s recipes mean to me, I can appreciate a movie that puts family traditions at the heart of the story.
Philo currently marks Soul Food “Watch free,” so you can watch without a paid subscription. It is rated R, so save this one for the adults. Watch Soul Food free on Philo. Availability can change.
Home for the Holidays
For a Thanksgiving story with plenty of family complications
Holly Hunter plays Claudia, who returns to her childhood home for Thanksgiving after her teenage daughter decides to stay behind. The family gathering delivers old tensions, awkward moments, and a little unexpected romance.
If your holiday table has strong opinions about everything from cranberry sauce to who gets the good serving spoon, the premise may sound familiar. Sometimes fictional family disagreements make our own feel a little less dramatic.
Philo has a catalog listing for this PG-13 movie. Confirm current access and any upcoming airings in your account. Find Home for the Holidays on Philo.
A Royal Family Holiday
For another Thanksgiving family comedy to check
Getting everyone together for a holiday can take some coordination. In this movie, the parents go considerably further: they pretend to split up to bring their grown children home for Thanksgiving.
I would suggest assigning someone the rolls before trying that particular family-reunion strategy.
Philo lists the movie as TV-PG. Check the title page and your account for current viewing options. Find A Royal Family Holiday on Philo.

Rocky
For a little underdog determination after dinner
Sylvester Stallone plays Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia boxer who gets an unexpected chance to face heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Between training and his growing relationship with Adrian, Rocky has much more on the line than a boxing match.
After the cooking and cleanup, I would be happy to watch somebody else do the heavy lifting. This is an option for anyone at the gathering who would rather have a sports drama than another holiday comedy.
Philo lists this PG film with its Essential and Bundle+ paid plans and an AMC channel listing. Check your account for viewing and recording options. Check Rocky on Philo.
Grumpy Old Men
For the adults who enjoy a little bickering with their comedy
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau play longtime neighbors whose rivalry heats up when a woman played by Ann-Margret catches both their eyes. Underneath the squabbling, their friendship still matters.
After a day spent getting everyone together, a comedy about two people who can’t stop getting on each other’s nerves sounds like an entertaining way to unwind. I would save this PG-13 pick for a group comfortable with adult language and situations.
Philo currently shows an upcoming MTV2 airing included with Essential and Bundle+ paid plans, along with an option to subscribe to record. Check the listing for the current schedule. Check Grumpy Old Men on Philo.
Silver Linings Playbook — An Upcoming Free Philo Airing
For an adults’ movie night with family complications and Philadelphia Eagles fans
Bradley Cooper plays Pat, who moves back in with his parents while trying to rebuild his life. Jennifer Lawrence plays Tiffany, whose offer to help him comes with a request of her own. Football, family expectations, and a dance competition all become part of the story.
If the holiday conversation has already turned to football, this gives the sports fans and the romantic-comedy fans something to watch together. It is rated R for adult content, so I would keep this one for the grown-ups.
Philo currently lists an upcoming free airing on HerSphere and a sign-up option to record it. You can watch that scheduled airing without a paid Philo subscription; check the current time and recording options rather than assuming it is available on demand. Check Silver Linings Playbook on Philo.
The Sound of Music — A Free Philo Airing to Plan For
For a musical to settle in with after the holiday bustle
Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young woman who becomes governess to the seven von Trapp children in Austria. Music helps her connect with the children and brings new warmth into their home.
This isn’t a Thanksgiving story, but after a busy day in the kitchen, a familiar musical sounds like a lovely way to slow down. I would put out the leftover pie and let everyone get comfortable.
You can watch The Sound of Music free on Philo when it airs on NOST – The Nostalgia Network. Philo currently lists an upcoming free airing and a sign-up option to record it. This is a scheduled airing, rather than a promise of immediate on-demand viewing. Check the listing for the current time and recording options before planning your movie night. The film is rated G. Check the free airing of The Sound of Music on Philo.
An Added Bonus: The Waltons — The Thanksgiving Story
If you want something with an old-fashioned family Thanksgiving feel, add The Thanksgiving Story from The Waltons to your list. This is season 2, episode 10 of the television series, rather than a standalone movie.
While the family prepares for Thanksgiving, John-Boy looks forward to a visit from his girlfriend. After all the planning that goes into our own holiday meal, I like the idea of settling in with a story built around another family getting ready for the day.
Philo lists this TV-G episode as included with its Essential and Bundle+ paid plans. Check your account for current playback or upcoming airings. Find The Waltons: The Thanksgiving Story on Philo.
Free Thanksgiving Viewing Beyond Movies
If you would rather watch something food-focused, Philo’s Martha Holidays listing includes Thanksgiving episodes about side dishes and pies, with episodes marked “Watch free.” Check the current listing for episode access.
That sounds like a useful choice for anyone already thinking about next year’s menu. Just don’t let a television recipe convince you that Grandma’s Thanksgiving dressing needs changing. Some things are already settled. Browse Martha Holidays on Philo.
Plan Your Thanksgiving Movies on Philo Before Everyone Gets Comfortable
My advice is to pick a couple of options ahead of time. Check the rating, confirm whether you can watch immediately or need to save an upcoming airing, and have a backup. For Thanksgiving movies on Philo, that quick check is more useful than assuming every catalog title is ready to play.
Then pass around the leftover pie and let somebody else lose their luggage for a while.
