Valentines Party Snacks Love Bug

Love Bugs with Hostess Snoballs for Valentine's Party Snacks

My husband and I were in the grocery store shopping for another recipe when I saw these pink Hostess Snoballs snack cakes on the shelf. That's when it hit me. I could totally make Love Bugs with these. I searched the internet as well as Pinterest and NO ONE has made this recipe before. It's very rare that I actually come up with something that isn't already flooded out there on the internet so I was pretty excited to get home and make this fun valentine’s day snack. These would also be special treats you can hand out individually at a party, or send as a school snack on Valentine's Day!

If you are not into bugs, you could make Valentine snakes or caterpillars with the Snoballs instead if you'd like. It would be a little more work but it's all up to personal preference. No need for a cookie cutter or special tools as we made this recipe as simple as possible. One thing I will mention with this recipe is you can certainly leave the legs off or even add more legs. Your Valentines party snacks should be stress free and meet your needs.

How to Assemble

I wanted to make these Snoballls as “bug” shaped as possible. We started off with the pink snack cake and added details including pretzels, mini M&M's, and candy eyeballs. Adding your details to the Luv Bug is easy– all you need is a tube of frosting or some melted chocolate to work as the “glue” you could even melt pink chocolate melts or white chocolate with a drop of coloring added. Pretzel rods easily stick into the sides of the snack cake with no icing needed. We found all these simple ingredients  right at Walmart, so this one is definitely an easy recipe you can put together at the last minute! Those are sometimes the most important things to add to our Valentines party snacks-EASY!

Valentines Party Snacks Love Bug

I wanted to add Conversation Hearts candies to the “antennae” but we could not find conversation hearts anywhere! In the past I've seen them at Dollar Tree in those single serve boxes. We never did see them, but at the local dollar store we found and bought foam candy hearts with sticky backs. We were so excited when we opened the package and saw that some of the foam hearts said love bug on them. You can definitely use what you have on hand for these, and even add grapes or raisins instead of candy for an addition that contains less sugar . If you find the foam hearts or stickers you can attach them to toothpicks or bamboo skewers to stand up in fruit or another Valentine snack on your tray. I like to add some fruit for a healthy snack with the desserts and other homemade treats.

Follow the instructions in the recipe to assemble this fun snack! Once you make one or two, you can let the whole family make these! Of course, kids like to decorate their own desserts, so these Luv Bugs are a good idea to keep the kids busy as well, such a delicious way to have a fun day.

How to Serve:

There are lots of easy options  for serving these! If you just have one or two people, arrange them on a heart shape dessert or napkin for a sweet treat with no fuss. For a larger group, I like the idea of arranging them on a large platter, you could even line a baking sheet with red doilies from the dollar store. You can continue the “bug” theme by making a garden of fresh strawberries, fresh raspberries, and other fruits like grapes, apple slices and more. Add a couple fruit kabobs for additional centerpieces on your platter to resemble branches! This is a fun way to achieve a larger dessert! It's also an option for healthy Valentine's Day treats for those who cannot have sugar. Fruit is also a great balance for school parties and anyone who likes to include healthy alternative snacks along with sweets.

These Luv Bug Valentine's Day Snacks are also a fun idea for adults, believe it or not! If you have a special occasion planned at work or with a group of friends, add a couple of these to a Valentine's Day snack board! Add good stuff like nuts, chocolate hearts like Dove or Russel Stover, and your favorite ingredients for a cheese board. Other decorations include mini marshmallows, rice krispies treats, and even a bowl of red velvet puppy chow mix! (Find our Valentine's Day snack mix here!) Go all out in your presentation, it is a sweet way to dress up something simple for Valentine's Day dinners or a classroom treat.

Sometimes I like to put out strawberry cheesecake for the grown ups and do a kids treat tray at a Valentine's Day party or even birthday parties. This is such an easy dessert to make for special people you just assemble and are ready to go. If you are making treats for the entire class you want to store these in an airtight container for transporting them. You can set them on parchment paper or use larger cupcake liners to keep them from sticking to the container or each other. Don't worry this is not our only idea for Valentines party snacks!

Instructions:

Unwrap your Snoball and take one pretzel stick and break it in half. Stick one conversation heart on the end of each pretzel stick by peeling the back of the foam heart. If you are using actual conversation hearts you can attach them with frosting or decorating gel. Next attach the pretzel sticks to the top of your snoball. Now you will want to add a little frosting or gel to the back of your candy eyeballs and attach them to the front of your snowball. Now you're going to add your spots on the bug. A great way to do that is to also use the frosting or gel to attach the mini M&M's to the top back of your bug. Last but not least it's time to add your legs. You can add as many as four to six legs to your bug. You can even add a little frosting to the ends for feet.

However you decide to decorate your SnoBalls you can find a festive way to celebrate Valentine's Day. You can use a cute heart shaped plate for this special snack or serve them individually for Valentine's Day dinner's dessert.
