In the winter, we tend to huddle indoors more. This can make our homes feel a little stale and uninteresting. But rather than feeling stuck indoors for the next few months, you can add some new life into your home with simple updates, making it feel like a cozy retreat once again. Today we are going to talk about Winter Home Decor Refresh on a Budget.

With simple changes that don’t cost a fortune, you can refresh your home decor for winter in no time! Whether it’s rearranging furniture or adding new accessories, there are many ways to bring fresh life into your home this season.

Add new throws and blankets

Winter is the season for cuddling up with a blanket. Why not refresh your blankets to brighten up your home? Find some new throw blankets in fun colors and patterns to switch things up in your home.

Blankets don’t just have to be for cozying up on the couch. You can also use them as accents, table runners for special events and celebrations, or even as decoration on the wall. Replace old, dingy-looking blankets with new colorful ones. You can also add a pop of color to your bed with a new duvet cover in a fun pattern or color.

If you have a spare corner in the main living area, a large floor basket with throw blankets or couch pillows can brighten up a space. It's also a great thing to have for guests. If you're hosting friends and family in the colder months, having blankets within reach is a great idea for guests. Find some cute throw blankets on Amazon, Target, or even Walmart in the early fall months.

Not sure you can afford to add new home accessories? Check out local consignment, thirft, or charity shops in order to make this change on a budget. Often you can find new or almost new home decor. If you have a big box discount store in your area, be sure to check that out too. Or, if you’ve got the skills, try knitting blankets yourself!

Refresh your furniture

The best way to refresh your furniture for winter is to give it a quick clean. Spot clean your sofa and chairs, or have them professionally cleaned, to get rid of all the dust and grime that comes with indoor and outdoor activities in the colder months.

If you are able to invest a little more money, another idea is to blend your existing furniture with some new pieces to freshen up your room. You can add a new lamp to the living room, a new bookshelf in the study, a new table runner in the dining room, or a new rug in the bedroom. You can find these at thift stores, discount stores, places such as TJ Maxx or Homegoods, charity shops, or even on online marketplaces through social media. This allows you to get something new at a cheaper price. Don't forget to look for clearance first!

Try a bold color or wallpaper for an accent wall

One of the easiest ways to freshen up your home for winter is to turn one of your walls a bold color. You can choose any color that you like, but we recommend a warm, wintery hue for a subtle seasonal refresh.

Alternatively, try a new wallpaper on an accent wall. Here and there you can find sites with discounts and sales so you can get these wallpapers at a cheaper price.

Introduce natural lighting

Natural lighting is essential when you’re trying to refresh your home for winter. Open your curtains and let the light in. Winter is a darker time, so place lamps in areas that need an extra boost of light, like by the bedside table or in the desk. Make sure to add lamps that suit your home’s decor.

Add greenery and flowers

Winter not only has fewer daylight hours, but it can also be dim. Brighten up your space by bringing some greenery indoors with a few houseplants. You can also place a small flowerpot on your windowsill or desk. Flowers are a great way to add some color and life to your home. They are also a great decoration for the winter months, and can also improve the air quality in your home. Plants are a super cheap way to liven up your home for the winter.

Fall Tree

Adding accent lighting along with plants is another great strategy to brighen up a dim interior space. Look for LED bulbs with a daylight hue. Not sure about that? You can always get creative and use string lights anywhere! We love Christmas and fall, and our fall tree always adds so much color and cheer to our dining room.

Repurpose existing items in your home

If you want to refresh your home, but don’t have the cash to do so, don’t worry. Try repurposing existing items in your home. Don’t throw out old pots and vases — you can use them to hold flowers or even smaller accessories. You can also use old picture frames to frame nature photos. And don’t throw away old candles — use them to add some flair to your table setting or give them as gifts to friends and family.

Need a new accent table? An old half-height bookshelf will do the trick! Cover with an inexpensive tablecloth or throw, and create a new space for displaying holiday decor or accent pieces! I do this every year and it's a great way to save money on an unnecessary additional piece of furniture.

In order to give decor a new look this holiday season, try repainting them into a more wintry color, or simply putting them in different places around your house. The change of position can be enough to given them a sense of refresh. In terms of repaiting older accents and decor, look for fall holiday colors such as oranges, browns, or Christmas colors like red, gold, winter white, navy blue, green, etc.

Decorating for Christmas on a budget

If you’re watching the budget this year but still want a fabulous home for the holidays, there are ways to keep your decor frugal and stylish. There are many ways to cut costs when decorating your home for Christmas. It just requires some thought beforehand.

Check out Pinterest for high end Christmas Decor looks. You can DIY many options yourself. See something from Pottery Barn you love? Chances there's a great Amazon or Dollar Tree Dupe you can find! Plan ahead, since discount decor often goes fast. There are a lot of people who love a designer look on a small budget!

Make a budget and stick to it

If you don’t know how much you’ll need for Christmas decorations, you’ll probably overspend. Make a rough estimate of how much you’d like to spend on decor, and create a budget to stick to. The easiest way to budget is to decide how much you can afford to spend on each room of your house. You can easily spend several thousand dollars on decorations if you’re not careful.

Don’t buy new decorations

You may feel the urge to purchase decorations brand new, but resist it. Instead, check your closets and garage to see if you have decorations that you can reuse. If you still want to buy new decorations, try to find them secondhand. Alternatively, DIY your decorations.

If you're just starting out in a new home or apartment, ask around. There are many people who have accumulated Christmas decor over the years and simply have too much to even decorate with. Ask around to friends via social media or at work or in a group setting to see if anyone has decor they are getting rid of. If anyone is needing to clean out Christmas decor, they will likely be happy to pass it on to someone who can use it. You can even ask neighbors on the Nextdoor app if anyone is getting rid of old Christmas decorations. There are always people happy to offer!

Shop at the right time

The best time to buy decorations is when they go on clearance. You can find amazing deals each year at the end of October and beginning of November. If you want to think really far in advance, January is actually the best time to find cheap decorations, as shops try to get rid of their stock.

The holidays are a time for family, friends and fun. With a little bit of creativity and frugality, you can get the most out of your decorations without breaking the bank. Keep these tips in mind, and you’re sure to have a wonderful holiday season without spending too much.

Now that you know how to keep your decorations frugal, you can relax and enjoy the holidays without worrying as much about your wallet. From choosing decorations that can be reused to shopping wisely, there are many ways you can save money when decorating your home for Christmas.
