Reeses Spider Cookies

Halloween baking should feel fun, festive, and just a little mischievous—and these Reese’s Spider Cookies deliver all of that in one adorable bite. They’re soft, chewy, and loaded with buttery toffee bits, then topped with a melty Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup that becomes the spider’s “body.” Add candy eyes and icing legs, and suddenly you’ve got a tray full of sweet little critters ready to crawl across your Halloween dessert table.

Why You’ll Love These Reese’s Spider Cookies

Halloween treats don’t need to be complicated to be memorable. These cookies start with a simple cake mix base, which keeps the prep fast and foolproof. The texture stays soft and tender, and the Heath toffee bits melt into tiny pockets of buttery crunch. Once the cookies come out of the oven, you press a Reese’s cup into the warm center. The heat softens the chocolate just enough to help it stick, creating the perfect spider body.

Kids love decorating these cookies, adults love eating them, and you’ll love how quickly they come together. They’re ideal for Halloween parties, school events, bake sales, or a cozy October movie night.

How to Make Reese’s Spider Cookies

Step 1: Prep Your Baking Sheet

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. This prevents sticking and helps the cookies bake evenly.

Step 2: Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs. The batter will be thicker than traditional cookie dough, but that’s exactly what you want. Fold in the Heath toffee bits so they’re evenly distributed.

Step 3: Scoop and Bake

Use your cookie scoop to portion the dough into 1 ½ tablespoon balls. Place them two inches apart on your baking sheet. Bake for 9–11 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean.

Step 4: Add the Body to Your Reese’s Spider Cookies

Let the cookies cool on the tray for 5 minutes. While they’re still warm, gently press a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup into the center of each cookie. The warmth melts the chocolate slightly, helping it adhere.

Do not press it all the way through, you want the peanut butter cup to stick out for the spider body.

Step 5: Pipe the Legs

Once the cookies have cooled enough to handle, use black cookie icing to pipe eight legs—four on each side of the Reese’s cup. You can make them straight, curved, or wiggly depending on how spooky you want your spiders to look.

Step 6: Attach the Eyes

Melt your candy melts or chocolate chips in 10‑second intervals in the microwave, stirring between each burst. Dab a tiny bit of melted chocolate on the back of each candy eye and press them onto the Reese’s cup. Two eyes per Reese’s spider cookie, unless you want to get creative and give them more.

Step 7: Let Them Set

Allow the cookies to cool for at least 30 minutes so the icing and chocolate can fully set. If you’re in a hurry, pop the tray into the fridge for 10–15 minutes.

Tips for Perfect Reese’s Spider Cookies

Choose the Right Cake Mix Size

The recipe is calibrated for a 13.25 oz cake mix. If yours is 15.25 oz, increase the oil to ½ cup to keep the dough soft and workable.

Customize the Mix‑Ins

Toffee bits add crunch, but you can swap them for:

  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Halloween sprinkles
  • Chopped nuts
  • Crushed pretzels

Chill the Dough (Optional)

You don’t have to chill the dough, but doing so for 20–30 minutes helps reduce spreading and creates a thicker cookie.

Reese’s Spider Cookies

Make Them Ahead

These cookies store beautifully. Once decorated and fully set, keep them in an airtight container for up to three days. They also freeze well—just freeze undecorated cookies and add the spider details after thawing.

Ingredients

  • 13.25 oz Betty Crocker Butter Yellow cake mix (do not follow preparations on box)
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 16 Reese’s peanut butter cups
  • 1 cup Heath English toffee bits
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate candy melts (you can also use chocolate chips or frosting)
  • 32 candy eyes
  • Black cookie icing, for the legs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, stir the cake mix, oil, and eggs until combined.
  3. Add the heath toffee bits and fold together to combine.
  4. Scoop the dough using a 1 ½ tablespoon cookie scoop and place them two inches apart on the lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean when inserted in the center of a cookie.
  6. Remove the cookies from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes on the tray. While warm, gently press a Reese’s peanut butter cup top down into the center of each cookie. Do not press it all the way through, you want the peanut butter cup to stick out for the spider body. As the cookies warm, it will melt the peanut butter cups a bit so that it adheres to the cookie.
  7. Once the cookies have cooled a bit, you can start decorating. Use the cookie icing to pipe the spider’s legs, 4 on each side. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
  8. Place candy melts or chocolate chips in a bowl and melt in the microwave in 10 second intervals. Stir at each interval so it heats evenly.
  9. Dab the backs of two candy eyes with melted chocolate and then place them on the side of the Reese’s peanut butter cup. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
  10. Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate and icing to fully set. If you want to speed up the setting process, just pop them in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. If you don’t want to wait, simply enjoy them slightly warm!
