Homemade Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
As part of my ” Make Ahead Meals” series I am trying to do for my family in order to cut down on time and stress for making meals as well as having the peace of mind of using my own ingredients, I decided to share this Homemade Mozzarella Sticks Recipe with you guys.
What You Need:
- 12 sticks of string cheese in your choice of cheese – I used mozzarella
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp of flour
- 5 tbsp of bread crumbs
- 2 tbsp of parmesan cheese
- A tad of olive oil, or cooking spray
Start with your favorite mozzarella cheese sticks. I love the Organic Valley brand. If you're not a mozzarella fan , go crazy and get cheddar or whatever.
Roll them in your mixture and put them in the pan to cook. These are so easy and I love the fact that there is no butter used.
Homemade Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
Make these appetizers from scratch- so much better than frozen
Ingredients
- 12 sticks of string cheese in your choice of cheese – I used mozzarella
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp of flour
- 5 tbsp of bread crumbs
- 2 tbsp of parmesan cheese
- A tad of olive oil, or cooking spray
Instructions
- Cut the cheese sticks in half, making 24 slices, then freeze the slices in the freezer until completely frozen
- Beat the egg in a small bowl. Use a separate bowl to combine the bread crumbs and parmesan cheese
- To bread the cheese sticks: First dip the frozen cheese stick into the flour, then into the egg, then into the bread crumb mixture
- Once all of the cheese sticks are coated, place them on a baking sheet covered with aluminum foil coated with a few drops of olive oil or sprayed with cooking spray (this helps keep them from sticking)
- Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for about 4 minutes, or until crisp. Watch them closely so they don’t melt completely!
- These are so much healthier because they have no butter in them and are baked. Serve with marinara sauce and enjoy! ☺
How to Store Leftover Homemade Mozzarella Sticks
To store leftover homemade mozzarella sticks properly, follow these steps:
- Allow the mozzarella sticks to cool completely at room temperature before storing them.
- Place the cooled mozzarella sticks in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. If stacking the sticks, separate the layers with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together.
- Store the container or bag of mozzarella sticks in the refrigerator. They can be stored in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.
- If you want to store them for a longer period, you can freeze the mozzarella sticks. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze them until solid. Once frozen, transfer the sticks to a freezer-safe container or bag, making sure to remove any excess air before sealing. Properly frozen mozzarella sticks can last for up to 1-2 months.
- When you're ready to enjoy the mozzarella sticks, reheat them in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until heated through and crispy. Avoid microwaving them as it can make the coating soggy.
How to Make Mozzarella Sticks in the Air fryer
To make homemade mozzarella sticks in the air fryer with those ingredients, follow these steps:
- Prepare the ingredients: Cut each string cheese stick in half to make 24 shorter sticks. In a small bowl, beat the egg. In another small bowl, place the flour. In a third bowl, mix together the bread crumbs and parmesan cheese.
- Coat the cheese sticks: Dip each cheese stick half in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the beaten egg, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the stick in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere the crumbs.
- Arrange in the air fryer: Lightly grease the air fryer basket with olive oil or cooking spray. Place the coated cheese sticks in a single layer in the basket, making sure they are not touching each other.
- Cook in the air fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C). Once preheated, place the basket in the air fryer and cook the mozzarella sticks for 6-8 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside and the cheese is melted inside. Depending on the size and power of your air fryer, you may need to adjust the cooking time.
- Serve: Carefully remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them with marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
