Why are my Oreo balls falling apart?

Troubleshooting your Oreo ball recipe? Chances are the mixture is too dry or moist. A too-dry mixture will fall apart as the crushed cookies will not stick together well. On the other hand, a mushy mixture will result if you have too much cream cheese or have used a vanilla frosting in place of the cream cheese. Air temperature and humidity come into play a lot when creating confections, so keep this in mind.

If you are in a very humid climate, start with half of the cream cheese this recipe calls for. Mix in the food processor or with your electric mixer until the dough is thick enough to roll into a ball without losing its shape. If the mixture is too thick, falling apart, or not all of the Oreo Crumbs are becoming incorporated, add more cream cheese in 1-2 Tablespoon increments. If you are in a dry climate, consider starting with more cream cheese and adding the final amounts slowly after pulsing the food processor. Do not add water to thin out the mixture. This Peppermint Christmas Oreo Balls Recipe also contains candy cane pieces, so these may somewhat hold together your Oreo balls better than a mixture without them.

Should you add the white filling to the mixture? In this case, yes. This recipe is written for using the entire Oreo including the white filling. Scroll to the bottom of this post for the exact recipe. Some recipes may have you leave out the Oreo cream filling and just use the block of cream cheese, so be careful to read your recipe first before putting your ingredients together!

How long do Oreo balls last?

This is a common question, since most of us are thinking about when to prep foods for our Christmas or holiday gatherings. In an airtight container in the fridge, these last about three weeks. They are best served within 3 days for the best flavor and texture. While you can leave these at room temp during your party or gathering, they are best served chilled. Keep them stored in the refrigerator and do not store at room temperature. For food safety reasons, we recommend refrigeration for storage of anything containing dairy like cream cheese. Holiday parties often include small kids, elderly, or expectant mothers- who often need extra caution for food safety!
